How long have you been pochade painting?
It took over from using sketch books, so probably about 5 years ago.
What 1st got you into pochade painting?
I wanted to respond to what I was seeing in paint (be it oil, acrylic or pastel). The pochade box proves practical and gives versatility & directness to my approach.
What has been your best pochade place to paint or still life?
On a good day it can be anywhere.
What time of the year do you prefer to paint in terms of temperature and light?
I would say Spring & Autumn for a comfort point of view (at my age). However, I really like working in Winter with a ‘flat’ light & challenging close tones.
What time of the day is your favourite?
Generally early morning or late afternoon/early evening.
What pochade boxes do you use?
I have a couple of real ‘cheapies’, but my current favourite is the Mabef.
What do you keep in your pochade box colours, brushes etc?
A variety of hog & synthetic brushes (flats & filberts mainly). Palette knife & my regular colours are chosen from the following dependent on the location; Light red, cadmium red, yellow ochre, raw sienna, cadmium yellow, Naples yellow, burnt sienna, ultramarine, cerulean, cobalt violet & titanium white. I sometimes like to spice a palette a little with viridian & alizarin crimson
What do you prefer to paint on, canvas board, primed millboard?
Primed MDF board or canvas.
Who would you say is your favourite painter?
Too many & varied to mention, however, some of my favourites are, Sickert, Turner, Sisley and Vuillard.
What do you look at in a good painting more than anything?
Convincing colour and tonal relationships.
What is your favourite size to work on (box size)?
Pochade – board or canvass size 10”x12” and 12”x14”. Box easel – board or canvass size14”x18” and 16”x20”. However, depending on the location I sometimes work larger.
